Forum for New & Incoming Chairs and Directors
May 28 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The Faculty Association would like to invite all new and incoming Chairs and Directors to a forum to hear from experienced chairs discuss how they have managed conflicting expectations, enlisted the help of colleagues and staff effectively, dealt with particularly challenging situations, and talk about what they find rewarding about the role.
The Forum will include a panel of experienced Chairs:
Catherine Caws (French)
Michael McGuire (Electrical and Computer Engineering)
Ulrich Mueller, (Psychology)
Jean-Paul Restoule (Indigenous Education)
Chris Bose, FA Chairs and Directors Portfolio Holder, and Lynne Marks, FA President, both former Chairs, will also have a few things to say.
One of the cornerstones of collegial governance is an understanding and appreciation for the different roles we all play in making UVic work. This forum is meant to shed some light on the many challenges Chairs face and on the goals they work towards to improve their departments and assist their colleagues. While our immediate focus is to provide support for new and incoming chairs, anybody with an interest in collegial governance is welcome to attend. We will give priority to questions from new chairs before taking questions from other participants, time.
This Forum is directed to:
• recently appointed Chairs or Directors
• Associate Chairs
• soon-to-start Chairs (or Directors) – July 2021 or January 2022
• faculty members who are serving on Chair search committees or otherwise interested in hearing from experienced Chairs
• anyone who may be considering stepping forward in these roles, or anyone curious about why someone might want to do this!
Please RSVP to email@example.com and we will send you an Outlook calendar invitation.
