Arbitration Wraps Up

Arbitration Wraps Up

On Friday afternoon, September 27, the salary and benefit arbitration hearing between the University and the Faculty Association before arbitrator Colin Taylor concluded. The Framework Agreement calls for the arbitrator to make a ruling within 30 working days; however, the arbitrator requested an extension, which the parties agreed to. The arbitrator indicated that he would provide his award as soon as possible.

This concludes what has been a very long process of preparatory work, negotiations, mediation and arbitration for which the negotiating team began its work in fall of 2011. Our presentation, which has been posted online (see link in previous posting below), dealt with a variety of issues including but not limited to an appropriate general salary increase, a dependent tuition waiver, study leave salaries, parity for librarians, and benefits. The Association’s team put forward solid, comprehensive and we believe compelling arguments in front of the arbitrator. The arbitrator’s award will cover the period July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2014 and we look forward to receiving it.

Preparation for the next round of bargaining will begin later this fall.

The Faculty Association welcomes expressions of interest from Members interested in becoming involved in this process.

Unceded Lək̓ʷəŋən & W̱SÁNEĆ Territories

We acknowledge and respect the Lək̓ʷəŋən speaking peoples on whose traditional territory the university stands and the Songhees, Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

We acknowledge the devastation that government-created residential schools and Indian hospitals have inflicted on the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples and the ongoing effectics of concentric trauma that continue to this day.
